Give Your Feet a Treat This Winter

November 23, 2008 00:11 AM  BY  STACEY BARRUS

Most homeowners love the look of tile, wood, marble floors, but dread stepping out of their soothing shower onto cold tile, especially during those frigid winter months. And many love tile or wood in their kitchens and living areas but worry about their little ones playing and running around on cold floors. That’s why so many are opting for radiant floor heating systems to warm up their floors.

The installation of radiant floor heating is not new: heated floors have been installed under bathroom and kitchen tile in the United States for the past 10 years and the warming products continue to gain popularity. Many in the kitchen and bath industry expect radiant floor heating to continue to play a big role among homeowners who crave comfort features.

In addition to providing warmth, these new floor heating mats are energy efficient. Because it is under the carpet or floating wood and over the foam pad, it provides additional insulation from the cold sub-floor. The Environ II is constructed of an ultra thin heating wire that exists in four layers of foil, quickly and efficiently distributing heat. A 120-square-foot coverage would probably cost about 40 cents a day, on average.

Other benefits of radiant floor heating systems include:

  • Silent operation. There’s no hum or whistle of a forced air system.- Energy savings. Evenly distributed heat from a radiant floor heating system can allow the thermostat to be set two to four degrees less than in a forced-air heating system. This can reduce energy costs by 10 to 40 percent.

  • A healthier home. Forced air systems can spread dust, pollen, and germs. Dust mites and molds love carpet but don’t like warmth. European research performed in 21 households shows a 50 percent to 80 percent reduction in domestic dust mite populations in the households with radiant floor heating, thereby improving the quality of life (particularly for allergy sufferers).

  • Even, quiet warmth. Even wood, tile, or uncovered concrete floors can benefit from a radiant system

Green Heating Alternatives to Wood and Coal Burning Fireplaces

November 23, 2008 00:11 AM  BY  STACEY BARRUS

That’s hot! Many interior designers are adopting electric heating systems as fashionable and luxurious accessories to bathrooms, basements and home offices. Take a cue from these experts in home comforts and consider all of your options on the market today for your primary and secondary heating solutions.

The traditional idea of the furnace as the primary heating system for homes and businesses alike are now being challenged by newcomers to the heating system world: radiant baseboards, radiant floor heating systems and even radiant ceiling heaters. Clearly, the dynamics of home heating systems are changing.

Space heaters are also becoming a less expensive option to upgrading a poorly insulated home or to add supplemental heat to cold areas. Thermostone heaters from Climastar can mount to a wall and heated towel warmers are a couple of heating systems that have been commonly used in Europe for decades are now gaining acceptance in the United States and are used by more and more builders and designers. Many of these new heating systems are using electricity instead of natural gas or heating oil.

Heating Systems Tip: While fireplaces and wood- and coal-burning stoves become less popular, other alternative heating methods are quickly becoming more common, due to fuel costs and storage problems.

Fixing Hard to Heat Areas in Your Home

November 22, 2008 00:11 AM  BY  STACEY BARRUS

When you’re building a new home or remodeling your existing home, you’ll probably need to think about heating at some point.  We’d like to suggest radiant floor heating as a great way to add comfort and efficiency to the rooms in your home that are traditionally hard to heat.

Many homeowners thinking about doing renovations or upgrading their homes in some way would probably be astonished at the range of applications for radiant floor heating in residential homes. Bathrooms, kitchens and entryways are just a few of the many ideal spots in which to incorporate radiant heat. Tile, marble, slate, and even hardwood are floor coverings that are cold to step onto with bare feet during winter or summer are also super places for using a radiant heat product.

Wondering where else in your home that radiant floor heating would be a great fit?  How about the basement. Basements are one of the top requested areas to add radiant heat. Due to the fact that forced air systems heat air and hot air rises the basement is usually the living space that remains cold. New construction is the best time to add radiant heat to a basement.

Radiant Floor Heating Tip: A radiant heat product can be installed under a wide range of flooring throughout the home and take the cold bite out of these areas.  Just imagine never again having cold floors or feet–how great would that be!

Get Heat Where It's Needed Most

November 22, 2008 00:11 AM  BY  STACEY BARRUS

Whether you’re looking to reduce your electricity bill to reduce the strain on your pocketbook, or just concerned about energy usage in light of environmental issues, you can start with your heating systems.   Heating our places is one of our greatest energy hogs.  By taking a few steps, you can cut down the amount of electricity you use to heat your home. You’ll save money, as well as have a favorable impact on the environment.

Get heat where it’s needed .   I remember a conversation I had with my grandpa a couple of years ago when he was complaining about his gas bill after a cold winter.  What surprised me is that the money he and my grandma spent heating their home for the two of them was almost the same we spent heating our house for a full family.  Why?  Because many forced air systems are inefficient, and don’t provide a way to heat specific rooms, while bypassing rooms that are used less frequently.  The ability to heat only the rooms you use could save you a lot of money during cold winter months.  It doesn’t make sense to heat a guest bedroom that is used a few times a year.   However, most forced air systems don’t give us a choice.

This problem can be easily solved, however, by utilizing radiant heat.   Radiant heating systems give you the ability to heat specific rooms, without heating other rooms that are used less frequently.  Not only are radiant heating systems extremely efficient, but the ability to heat only the rooms you use the most will help cut your heating bills, sometimes by as much as half.  To find out more about these radiant heating systems, contact the staff at warmzone.com
