Heating System Safety

Now that summer will soon be drawing to a close, local gas companies are urging customers to test their heating systems now before the chilly weather arrives

By testing your heating systems early, you will be better prepared for the cold weather ahead. Taking a few minutes to concentrate on this now, when the weather is mild, can help give peace of mind and ensure that your heat works when you need it most.

Most gas companies will come and do a “green sticker” test for free. Having a qualified professional check your heating system before winter arrives will not only save you from being left out in the cold, but can actually help you to maximize your heaters efficiency. With the price of natural gas on the rise, who couldn’t use a few extra dollars in their pocket this winter.

Under certain conditions, all heating systems that burn fuels can leak deadly carbon monoxide (CO). These fuels include kerosene; oil; coal; both natural and liquefied petroleum gas; and wood. Having a professional inspection of your fuel-burning heating appliances is the first line of defense against the silent killer, carbon monoxide poisoning. CO is a colorless, odorless gas that can be produced by burning any fuel. The initial symptoms of CO poisoning are similar to flu, and include headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea and dizziness. Exposure to high levels of CO can even cause death.

It’s recommended that a yearly professional inspection of your heating systems is performed. This inspection should include checking chimneys, flues and vents for leakage and blockage by debris.
